One way to fend off and prevent sudden problems with your plumbing system is by scheduling professional maintenance once a year. This allows our technicians to thoroughly check for any signs of problems, or things that can turn into problems. However, if a pro is only checking your system once a year, you’d do well to check it on your own every few months or so. But what should you look for?

Storm Drainage Functionality: During this time of year, we’re at a high risk of flooding from rain conditions. Water damage in basements and crawlspaces of homes can be tremendous and can have lasting consequences such as mold growth. Storm drainage systems, though, are an excellent deterrent against this. It helps rid your property of not only water, but also debris like leaves, twigs, mud, and even garbage that can wash up in a storm.

Drainage: Speaking of drainage, how are the drains throughout your home operating? You shouldn’t be allowing a slow drain to remain that way. If it’s a single drain, then you might be dealing with a superficial clog that our pros can help remove. But if multiple drains are affected, then it’s possible you’re looking at a sewer line blockage, which needs to be inspected and resolved right away to prevent further damage and unhygienic backups.

Water Heater Status: Your water heater is at least 1 appliance in your home that you use 365 days a year. Therefore, you don’t want problems with it to go unnoticed. So, keep a close eye out for problems like water pooling around its base, and keep a close ear out for sounds like rumbling coming from the water storage tank—this indicates mineral buildup that can impact the efficiency and effectiveness of your water heater.

Outdoor Plumbing Condition: It’s safe to say we get a lot of rain. That rain can cause a lot of debris to build up in your gutters and storm drain, plus around your sprinkler heads and outdoor faucets. Be sure to clear away this debris on a regular basis, and check to see if corrosion is setting in on any of your outdoor plumbing.
